Lower back pain has endlessly been a struggle for most people and the pain can originate from a variety of things, but one of the most common causes is posture. From the way you stand and the way you sit, these actions can have a significant impact on how your back will ultimately feel. Being conscious of your posture is the first step to ease and/or prevent lower back pain.

A range of movements can be performed to help prevent and/or alleviate pain in the lower back. Standing upright instead of hunching over and sitting upright with lumbar support is a good start. Stretching is another excellent way to ease the tension. If you haven’t already, click the link to read the article on stretching. (tinyurl.com/whystretch)

Here are a few effective practices to help keep your lower back strong and loose;

  • 15–20mins workout will strengthen your core and provide newly oxygenated blood to help repair damaged muscles.
  • Stretching the lower back to release tension. Stretching when you wake up to rid yourself of the morning rigidity and loosen up the muscles.
  • Low impact aerobic exercise to increase blood flow to accelerate the healing process.
  • Massaging the back to allow better circulation of blood to help release tension in the afflicted area.
  • Try and avoid activities that put more stress than usual on the lower back.
  • Allow some time for rest and recovery, the body needs time to replenish itself.
  • Be conscious of your posture, don’t slouch or cave your back. Try to keep your back upright while standing or sitting.

It goes without saying, the tedious nature of lower back pain can affect not only your physical state but also your mental state. You may feel unmotivated and trapped due to the body being unable to move freely like it was designed to do. In addition to this, stress can also lead to tension in the lower back, so remember to take time out to breathe comfortably and properly take care of yourself mentally.

If you ignore the strain on your lower back and think it’ll magically get better on its own, you will experience more irritation and unpleasantness. The continuous discomfort will have a negative impact on your mood and ultimately affect how you get on with your day both mentally and physically.

Don’t forget to address the pain as soon as it becomes apparent! The sooner it’s dealt with, the sooner you’ll start to feel like yourself again.
